Whether you’ve been planning your wedding since you were a little girl or just since Mr. Right popped the question, one of the most important choices you’ll make is your dress. It needs to feel special the moment you slip it on. And on your wedding day, it needs to be breathtaking as you make your grand entrance. Finding the perfect gown and ensuring that it fits well is no easy feat, however. There are so many styles, so many shades of white, so many accessories to complete the look that shopping can be an overwhelming task. Thank goodness for Jean’s Bridal in Mount Pleasant, where the experienced staff is friendly and genuinely excited to be part of your celebration.

Michelle Wellmon, who has assisted hundreds of brides and their wedding parties, advised that an early start is key to the process.

“We suggest coming in about six to nine months in advance,” Wellmon said.

Starting early allows plenty of time to select the dress and for the fittings and alterations that ensure a custom fit. Brides often bring photos from magazines or online sources to help narrow the choices, but nothing compares to trying the gowns on to assess what really works for each woman. There are rows of beautiful gowns in every silhouette – bedazzled, lacy or simple.

“We also have a great selection of dresses for the bridesmaids as well as mother of the bride and mother of the groom,” Wellmon said, adding that they offer tuxedos and accessories for men as well.

Wellmon sees some new trends for spring 2014. She said the strapless gown is still popular but other styles are gaining in popularity.

“There are more sleeves and lace on the bodice – a slightly more covered, feminine look,” she said.

Other trends include halter necks, interesting back designs, coverups ranging from sheer lace overlays to silk or even fur jackets. In addition to every hue of white, designers are showing shades of blush and barely perceptible pinks. Traditional floor length is still the primary choice, but short dresses are popular and suited to warm days ahead. And many brides opt for two dresses, one for the ceremony and one for the reception.

Whatever the trends, brides often want to add a personal touch, such as a piece of a mother’s wedding dress or a lace heart sewn into the gown. Wellmon said one bride even requested that a silk flower be replaced with camouflage. She added that professional seamstresses are essential to make sure that every detail is perfect.

“We do a lot of custom work,” Wellmon explained. “Our seamstresses do very fine, quality work.”

Much effort and many hours go into creating that one special moment in a woman’s life, the moment she steps onto the aisle to meet her bridegroom, glowing with the knowledge that she is truly breathtaking.
